Kate MccGwire

I know I know, it’s not taxidermy but this blog just wouldn’t be complete with a tip of the hat to the incredible Kate MccGwire. She’s one of my favourite artists using animal materials and the work she produces is glorious.

In the pieces I want to look at here MccGwire uses mountains of feathers to create morphing snake like shapes that seem to move and change in front of your eyes. There is so much movement in the work it’s difficult not to imagine the pieces as living things.

I find them both utterly compelling and dark. There’s something quite frightening about seeing a column of feathers violently exploding through a wall and start to fill up a room. Even the pieces contained within glass cabinets look as though they could burst out of them with ease and engulf you.

Her work creates a truly original atmosphere. I find myself desperate to touch them but equally afraid to do so in case I should become devoured in the silent mass. Stunning.
