During one of my intense research sessions I came across the artist Kent Monkman.
Kent Monkman is an artist of Cree ancestry who works in a variety of media.
He also has an alter ego. Miss Chief Eagle Testickle (see below).
In the piece ‘The Collapsing Of Time And Space In An Ever Expanding Universe’ Miss Chief has swapped her usual pink fluffy Native American get up for a more subdued pink fluffy house coat to play the role of the aging diva. She sits alone staring through the window (and through tears) at the landscape of her youth while her record ‘Dance to Miss Chief’ plays on loop in the background.
I really love the way it is set up almost like a museum diorama but tells such an intense story about the past, present and future of the subject within it.
The creatures around her are closing in. The wolf looks ready to pounce as it prowls through piles of records and the beaver is chewing through the leg of the record player emphasising the fact that that time of her life is now over and casting a dark shadow over what is to come. All the while a crow perches above the scene observing Miss Chief with an ominous air.
You can check out more of Monkman’s work on his website.
